Westvleteren XII (Abdij St. Sixtus) : There are 10 Trappist monasteries in the world that brew. Almost none were known outside the local European communities where they are located. At least that was the case until word got out in 2005 that the Trappists of Saint Sixtus in Vleteren, Belgium might be producing a solid good tasting beer. They call their brew Westvleteren XII and they produce 126,000 gallons of this dark, quadruple style ale per year. Though demand for Westvleteren XII has reached epic proportions, the monks refuse to ramp up production. Much to their credit and to your inconvenience. ABV 10.2%
Where do we hope to find the most beer fans ? Some cities are known as beer cities and here is one of them. Living up to Australia’s sunny but chilled-out reputation, Melbourne’s breweries and bars are prime spots for a laid-back afternoon of sampling and conversation. The taps are always pouring local craft options at The Catfish, a casual, no-frills neighborhood bar that doubles as a live music venue and, improbably, a Philly cheesesteak emporium.
