Variable Fonts currently doesn’t have enough browser support but should be on our list of skills to learn. Variable Fonts are the evolution of the OpenType font specification. One font file can contain multiple variations of the typeface. Using CSS it is possible to access these variations and animate transitions between styles. In this example we can see a variable font which we can modify the parameters of for weight and serif, allowing us to not only create animations but multiple variations of the font. We can generically animate the font axes in CSS, by compressing or expanding it, but its other properties (those which refer to its morphology) will be decided by the font designer. A good example is Decovar a multi-style decorative variable font by David Berlow, which is designed to parametrize multiple properties.

We’ve all heard the rule that serifs are for print and sans serifs are for screen. But what are design trends for if not to give convention a little shaking up? While sans, with its clean readability, is still the go-to for longer bouts of website copy, more and more brands are turning towards bold serifs in other aspects of their designs such as headers and callouts. There’s a good reason for this: serifs were designed to be decorative, making them perfect for emphasis. And even though serifs are often associated with the past, they have lots of character and are more adaptable than you might think. Take for example the rounded serifs that play into Mailchimp’s cheerful branding. Or the wedge serifs and bold strokes that create a modern look for Medium.

Brutalism is described like this by the Nielsen Norman Group: “Brutalism in digital design is a style that intentionally attempts to look raw, haphazard, or unadorned. It echoes early 1990s-style websites (think Craigslist and the Drudge Report). Sometimes this aspect of brutalism is expressed as bare-bones, almost naked HTML site with blue links and monochromatic Monospace text.” And while few people would classify this design style as pretty, it does have a certain charm for some content types. And with a stark and bold style, it definitely makes an impact when you stumble on one of these designs.
